Have any of you heard about the Amazon rainforest? The Amazon rainforest is located in South America. The Amazon rainforest is also the largest tropical rainforest in the world. The Amazon River is the longest river in the world. The area of the Amazon rainforest is 6.7 million square kilometres. The rainforest is covered over nine different countries, and it also has the amazing wealthy ecosystem. It is the described as “lungs of earth”. The Amazon rainforest is a home to 47 million people and has over 2 million indigenous people. In the Amazon, in 2023, there is around 390 billion trees and there are about 16,000 species of trees. The Amazon is also home to 40,000 plant species, 3000 fish species, 1300 bird species, 430 mammals and 2.5 million insect species. One time the Amazon River was flowing in the wrong direction. In the river there’s also dolphins. They speak Portuguese, but also Spanish in some places. The Amazon River has a depth to 20 to 50 meters, but the deepest points are around 100 metres. Have you guys wondered if anybody has actually swum in the Amazon River? Well, on April 8, 2007, Martin Strel who is 52 years old, finished the first ever swim of the Amazon River! The Amazons top predators are the Jaguar, the harpy eagle green anaconda, giant otter, electric eel, ball shark, black caiman and arapaima. The Arapaima lives in the Amazon River and is the biggest freshwater fish in the world. One unique species in the Amazon rainforest is the Amazon river dolphin. They also have another name which is the pink river dolphin. The species are toothed whale, and they are native to South America. The Amazon river dolphin get a spectacular pink colour from scar tissue and and also from fighting contestants. They are a rare type of dolphin. There are about tens of thousands of pink dolphins in the world. One of the most dangerous animals in the Amazon rainforest is the green anaconda. The green anaconda can grow up to 30 feet long and weigh up to 500 lbs. They are the largest type of snake in the world. The green anaconda suffocates their prey and drowns them in the underwater before eating it. They will eat anything that they find but it is a non-venomous snake, but their bites can be very painful. They can only live up to 10 years but if it is taken care of good by a human, they can sometimes live up to the late 20s. They can also hold their breath for longer than 10 minutes.
